Mexico’s murder rate reaches a record level and … no one seems to be able to solve this situation. While President Lopez Obrador blames Donald Trump and US policies on his countries humanitarian crisis (Lopez Obrador desafía a Trump) he vows to increase the number of security agents. Is this related to something else?

Approximately 8,500 people have been murdered in Mexico since the beginning of the year. This means almost 10% more than this same period of time in 2019. Apart from this data, numbers here only reflect murders that have been recorded … this means that it is possible than hundreds of cases are not even considered for public records. Sad.

Government officials inform that Guanajuanto (Central Mexico) is the most violent region of the country. According to sources in the area, the fights between drug cartels (Jalisco and Santa Rosa de Lima) are making this situation worst and worst. How many “drug gang” related murders are currently under investigation only in Jalisco? 720.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) promised in his campaign he would be able to solve this situation by creating a new security force with a core in the national guard, increasing its man power with 80,000 new agents. This never happened and the “war on drugs” has to be addressed not only by the main power in the region (United States) but also by the core.

Colombia is a good example. This country become strong and confronted “drug trafficking” in an intense way partnering with other nations in the region that are approaching the situation in the same way like Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay (The Triple Frontier and why the US must increase its presence there).

Mexico is becoming a humanitarian crisis based on the “respect” that the current government and past administrations have for the “Drug Lords”. While Trump focuses his actions in stopping criminals related to this “practice” to get into the US, Mexico has to do something to cooperate. The crisis of violence and corruption that is taking over most of Central America and parts of South America can be solved with a joint command of the United States government and Latin American leaders, but if this last ones decide to deny this, then they will be “passive” partners of the cartel system.
