Former President of Peru, Alan García, died today after a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head as police were preparing to arrest him on Wednesday morning. He was the President of the South American country from 1985 to 1990 and 2006 to 2011. What happened?

Alan García was being investigated for money laundry in relation to a big corruption scandal that already ended with former President of Brazil, Lula, in jail and banned from politics and an impeachment process over his partner and later President of the same country, Dilma Rousseff. This corruption scandal involves as the main actor the Brazil base company, Odebrecht, which concentrates its activities in construction.

García was accused of being part of a system that involved this large construction company, one who was paying to politicians in exchange for the rights of developing different public works like highways, an electric train, bridges, dams, etc.

Part of this investigation, known as “Lava Jato”, already points to former President’s of Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia. While many other are under investigation, this company is accused of manipulating at least $800 million in bribes to get government contracts.
