The Santa Ana Cemetery has been vanadalized (not the first time) as a monument to Confederate soldiers was painted with the expression “racists”. Orange County authorities decided to remove the monument after controversy started over the location and motive of the “memorial”. At the same time recent information shows that at least 300 Civil War veterans are buried at this location. Can this spark similar events?

According to sources in the area, the Sons of Confederate Veterans built the monument back in 2004. But the cemetery says there are no records of “who decided to put it there, if the board approved it or who built it”. It looks like this was the best solution for local authorities to avoid more conflict.

From Santa Ana Republic we are trying to reach Sons of Confederate Veterans in order to get more detailed information about this episode and how it might be related to increasing “tension” in the local community. According to FOX 5 “Orange County Cemetery District General Manager Tim Deutsch said the vandalism was discovered Sunday and reported to police. He noted the monument is not directly visible on cemetery security cameras”.

Extremism is a big problem right now and it works for both sides. The local community has to engage in order to avoid violent conflicts that are not helpful for the evolution of the city and the county (Sand Diego Synagogue Shooting)

During the last years many voices raised alarms about the increasing power of “white supremacist” groups around Southern California and Orange County. But most if this information is misleading and Social Media does most of the job to empower “individuals” that maybe need more facts to understand the evolution of demographics and the meaning of community itself.
